In Greek mythology, a gotgon was a terrifying female creature with a horrific stare and snakes emerging out of her skull. The most infamous gorgon was the dreaded Medusa. with eyes of fire and a head of serprnts, Medusa had the ability to turn any creature she looked at into stone. The Greeks were convinced that they could harness these horrific maidens and use them to scare off other evil spirits. Because of this, the Greeks incorporated gorgons onto a number of buildings, naval ships and - as in the case of this silver drachm - coins. Just as the jack-o-lantern's original purpose was to scare off evil spirits lurking outside one's door, these sculptures and artistic renditions of gorgons were meant to keep the Greeks safe from harm. One of the most dangerous and frightening places for a Greek would have been the open ocean. The Knights received official endorsement by the Catholic Church in 1129 and flourished, growing in strength and wealth, until 1307, when bankrupt King Philip IV obtained permission from Pope Clement V to put an end to the Order. Many members in France and elsewhere were rounded up, charged with heresy, tortured, and burned at the stake. The order was officially disbanded in 1312 AD, but legend holds that a group of Knights Templar survived the massacre, went into hiding, and kept the Order alive and growing in strength until today.

The base silver deniers were struck to look like the French deniers tournois familiar to them back home in Western Europe.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0683/2979/9954/files/H-ID11462-Frankish-Philip-IV-CRUSADER-ER-C-AS116_v2copy_bbd5be00-04aa-4249-b05f-7a5aacc147a7.jpg?v=1750954497
ancient-judean-widows-mite-sterling-ring
Ancient Judean Prutah Coin Ring, Sterling

Ancient Bronze Prutah Coin Circa 134 - 104 BCE in Sterling Silver Ring . Certificate of Authenticity

John Hyrcanus (Yohanan Girhan) (born 164 BCE, died 104 BCE) was the son of Simon Maccabaeus, and a Hasmonean (Maccabean) leader of the 2nd century BC. After the murder of his father and and uncles (reportedly by Ptolemy, his brother-in-law) he stepped into his fathers' former offices, that of high priest and king (although some Jews never accepted any of the Hasmoneans as being legitimate kings, as they were not lineal descendants of David). He apparently took the regnal name "Hyrcanus" upon his accession to power. Taking a Greek regnal name was a significant political and cultural step away from the intransigent opposition to an rejection of Hellenistic culture which had characterized the Maccabean revolt against Seleucid rule. all subsequent Hasmonean rulers followed suit and adopted Greek names in their turn.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0683/2979/9954/files/H-R85-Y_C-AS217_Yehohanan-Bronze-Prutah-Sterling-ringcopy.jpg?v=1751306489
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0683/2979/9954/collections/Desktop_8_0427f4ca-f1d2-4199-ac77-538e93b499ec.png?v=1686077290
