Annia Galeria Faustina, also known as Faustina the Elder or Faustina Major, (about 100-141CE) was a paternal Aunt to Emperor Marcus Aurelius, and became and empress herself in 138CE taking the name  Augusta when her husband, Antoninus Pius, whom she had married sometime between 110-115CE, was named Roman Emperor. Their marriage produced two male and two female offspring, of whom only one daughter, Faustina the Younger survived to adulthood. Although the often unreliable Augustan History impugned her character, criticizing her for "levity" and "excessive frankness", she and Pius seem to have been happily married. Unfortunately Faustina died just three years after Antoninus Pius came to the throne.  He must have head her very high regard, as he never re-married and continued to strike coins in her honor, with her her name and image, until the end of his reign. Coins issued prior to her death are easily identified as they lack "DIVA" at the beginning  of the obverse legends. Pius also consecrated her and created a new alimenta in her name, the Puellae Faustinianae, a charity foundation which aimed to support the poor and orphan girls of Rome.
