The Cathars (Cathari) were a Christian dualist sect that flourished in Southern France and Northern Italy from the 12th to 14th centuries. They believed in a dualistic view of the universe, with good and evil forces battling for control, and they rejected the authority of the Catholic Church, its sacraments, hierarchy, and practices, including the belief in Jesus's human suffering and death. The Languedoc region of France, with its capital at Toulouse, was a major hub of the Cathar heresy.

Raymond VI, whose family minted this coin, was a nephew of King Louis VII of France and brother-in-law of King Richard I of England. Tolerant toward the many heretics among his subjects, Raymond VI was thought to have been an accessory to the murder of a papal legate, Peter of Castelnau, who had been urging him to act against the Cathari. After the Legate’s death (Jan. 15, 1208), when Catholic propaganda proved unsuccessful against the Cathars, Pope Innocent III proclaimed the crusade,- the Albigensian Crusade- against the Cathars of the Languedoc, which Raymond joined, perhaps as penance. Raymond VI was twice excommunicated by the Pope for being too lenient with the Cathars, and ultimately refused a Christian burial. The first of the military leaders of the Pope's Holy Army was a Cistercian abbot (Arnaud Amaury) best remembered for his command at Béziers: "Kill them all- the Lord will recognize his own"
