Ancient Byzantine Bronze Cross Pendant from Southeastern Europe Circa 700 - 1100 A.D. . This cross is framed in rich 18Kt yellow gold with a bezel-set .25ct Cognac Diamond. Cross measures 33mm tall x 28.2mm wide. Certificate of Authenticity.
The origin of Byzantine crosses dates back to the fourth century A.D.. Emperor St Constantine was responsible for Christianizing the Roman Empire and establishing the the capital of Constantinople. This era was to see the creation of excellent Art, architecture, and jewelry by the Romans, Greeks and Christians.
Jewelry reflected the changing times and attitudes towards Christianity and the acceptance by the Roman Empire of this new form of religion on all fronts. Crosses were worn as statements of faith...commonly depicting Jesus Christ or the Virgin mary. Magnificent crosses have been unearthed in archeological digs, and it is these Byzantine crosses that are the most beautiful of all this jewelry.
