Venitian AR Grosso

  • Description

Venetian silver grosso circa 1289-1310 A.D. in sterling silver pendant frame. Approximately 1" diameter pendant with 1-1/4" drop

Although almost all of its design elements are of Byzantine origin - including the iconic image of a facing Christ enthroned with the Greek inscription "IC XC" (for Jesus Christ) on its reverse - the particular combination in this silver coin of stable and strictly controlled weight and purity lasted for over 150 years - the only variation being the Doge - and thus became associated exclusively with Venice.

Introduced around 1202 by the mighty Doge Enrico Dandolo and backed by the thriving ecconomic power of the Republic, this type of coin remained the Dollar of Southeastern European ecconomy for well over a century, long after it's initial purpose of funding preperations for thr grand and infamous 4th Crusade that eventually sacked Constantinople.

The Venetian grosso is a prominent division point between coinage systems based on the penny and the era of larger silver and gold coins. the difference allowd government to manipulate the price of coins rather than the worth of the material itself.
