Mythology tells us that Helios, Greek god of the sun, is the son of Hyperion and Theia. He fell in love with the nymph Rhodes. Whenhe shone his light upon her, she transformed into the Island- hence, the Isle of Rhodes. The name Rhodes translates to "rose" and since antiquity, the island has been known as a flowery place.

The coins took on a different meaning during the middle ages. It was believed that the head of Helios was the head of Christ, the rose was the Rose of Sharon, and the coins were the thirty pieces of silver paid to Judas.
