Ancient Roman Denarius- Marcus Aurelius Antoninus the Philosopher

  • Description

Ancient Roman Silver Denarius Coin Pendant- Obverse: A bare headed Marcus Aurelius as Ceasar, facing right, legend around. Reverse: Priestly sacrificial implements; Knife, Sprinkler, ewer, lituus and simpulum. Pendant measures 1" wide , 1-1/4' drop.

Marcus Aurelius ruled from 161-180 CE. He was the fifth of the "Adoptive Emperors" in the Golden Age of the Empire under emperors Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, Antoninus Pius and himself. Breaking tradition by passing the Empire on to his own son rather adopting the best man for the job-Marcus Aurelius brought about the end of a dynasty.

Although the times were difficult; famine, plague and barbarians hurt Rome from within, as well as from without, Marcus himself, seemed to be a good and conscientious ruler, banning informers, stamping down hard on corrution and freeing slaves at every opprtunity.

Best known as the philospher-emperor who wrote down his "meditations" in Greek,Marcus Aurelius provided some of the best examples of stoic philosophy that we have.
