Spanish Treasure Coin, Half Reale, Sterling Silver Pendant. Circa 1550-1650. 35mm long x 22mm wide. Certificate of Authenticity.
These historic coins are known to collectors as “cobs”. The term "cob" is suggested, by many references, to come from the Spanish phrase "cabo de barra", or "end of the bar".Although full details are rarely clear, in part due to the ragged shape of the coin, the front features a cross, in some form, ranging from plain, to a “Jerusalem Cross”, with bars on the end.The reverse depicts the crest of either the Hapsburgs or the Bourbons, powerful European families who ruled in Spain.
